Foster + Partners has recently finished constructing the new headquarters for the National Bank of Kuwait. Situated in a prominent location in Kuwait City, the 300-meter tall skyscraper stands out among the buildings of Sharq, the city’s thriving financial district. The purpose of this new building is to bring together all of the bank’s corporate employees under one roof, fostering collaboration and improving well-being.
On the northern side, the curved façade unveils breathtaking panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf. A series of concrete fins runs along the path of the sun, stretching from the base to the top of the tower. These fins serve a dual purpose by providing structural support and contributing to the environmental strategy through effective shading. By tapering the floorplates inwards towards the base, the design optimizes floor space on the upper levels while creating self-shading as the overhanging floorplates shield the offices below. The building employs both passive and active measures to minimize water consumption, reduce energy usage, and enhance indoor air quality.
Throughout its sixty-three floors, the tower features sky lobbies that serve as social hubs and provide meeting facilities for the staff. At the tower’s base, an 18-meter-high lobby welcomes employees and visitors. The 18th level includes a double-height restaurant, followed by a state-of-the-art gym on the 19th level. Moving further up, there is a unique ballroom and auditorium on the 38th level, providing panoramic views of the bay and the city. Finally, on the 48th level, there is a triple-height boardroom.
